Morgan Volleyball knocks off Coppin again

by Keith Henry

It doesn't matter if these teams play at the Coppin Center, Hill Field House, the MEAC Tournament or at the new Physical Education Center, the Coppin State Lady Eagles still can't find a way to beat Morgan State in a volleyball match.

It was no different this past Friday night as CSU continued to stumble on themselves in a 3-1 (27-29, 18-25, 25-23, 16-25) loss to the Lady Bears in the Eagles Nest Auxilary Gym at the PEC.

What really hurt Coppin State (3-15, 0-3 MEAC) is the happenings of the first game. Coppin State took a commanding 18-12 lead based on the hitting of Christina Epps, Ashley Saunders and Vanity Massey. Morgan State countered by scoring the next seven points. It strated on a Rhyan Shy kill, an attack error from Haley Beechler, a kill from Erin Cox, a double block of Epps by Dominique Bozier and Shy, a double block of Massey from Jourdan Lemons and Bozier, a Massey attack error and another kill from Cox to give the Lady Bears a 19-18 lead.

The game went back and forth from there until Coppin built a 23-21 advantage on back to back Cox attack errors. However, Morgan State (4-14, 2-1 MEAC) fought back on a big serving error from Massey, then back to back aces from lemons to give MSU a 24-23 lead and the first game point. Ngebui Chafeh made an attack error to tie the score at 24. Then Chafeh made up for that with a kill, Epps tied the game at 25 with a kill, Shy put down a kill to give Morgan a third game point opportunity and cancelled it with an attack error after that. Chafeh 's kill gave MSU a fourth game point chance. Coppin fought that off with a Massey kill. Then Lemons finally put an end to the game with back to back kills.

Morgan didn't have much problems with the Lady Eagles in the second game as they raced off to an 11-3 advantage and was hardly threatened much of the way.

In the third game, Coppin showed some more good signs by getting off to a 9-5 lead. Most of those points were off MSU errors which didn't excite Coach Riley-Bozier. Morgan fought back to tie the game at 10 on a few CSU errors and kills from Bozier and Cox. It was nip and tuck most of the way until MSU errors reared their head again. That plus a Massey kill and a key double block of Shy by Alexandria Malesick and Massey gave Coppin a 21-16 advantage.

A little later, CSU was up 23-19 until the Lady Bears started their counter attack. It started on kill attempts from Saunders and Epps that went long. Then Lemons pounded a kill and Saunders' kill attempt went wide to tie the game at 23. But Coppin finally put it away on kills from Saunders and Epps.

The fourth game started with a tight battle until the Lady Eagles were ahead 10-9 on a kill from Massey. Morgan then scored the next four points on a kill from Cox, a Lemons ace, an attack error from Saunders and a double vlock of Epps by Cox and Shaundalyn Taylor to give MSU a 13-10 lead.
