Former Coppin State point guard Vince Goldsberry earned his opportunity to play at the professional level. Vince will be playing overseas in Macedonia.
Not long after playing well at the Diamond Midwest Invitational in Chicago, earning Camp MVP honors in the event, Goldsberry signed a pro contract to play basketball for Lirija in Macedonia. When asked about the opportunity in Chicago, Vince said during the online interview, “I was focused and determined on going there and getting signed. I'd already been to multiple showcases this summer and I realized that im very capable of being the best player there so I was just really confident in my ability.”
Vince is one of four young men from the Invitational who will be playing for Lirija this upcoming season.
Goldsberry was not the only Coppin player recently to play overseas. In 2009, former CSU guard Tywain McKee played professionally in Australia for the Wollongong Hawks of the National Basketball League. Other former Coppin State players like Rafi Reavis and Dorian Pena are currently playing professional basketball in the Phillippines.
He couldn't exactly recall when he got interested in playing basketball in the first place, but you could tell that basketball is in his blood. Vince said when asked about this, “The funny (thing) is that I have no clue (when he got interested in basketball). (It's) just genetics, I guess. I was born loving this game. Ever since I was young, this was all I knew. I've dedicated myself to basketball since I was seven.”
Vince enjoyed his time at Coppin State. But he also learned a few things from his time in Baltimore. Vince said, “I learned first and foremost that no matter how bad things can get or how rough they may seem, God's plan for you will always prevail. Attending Coppin and playing for Fang was the best thing for me. I don't regret anything. The ups or the downs. I realized that everything Fang has taught me was for this moment and I thank him for that!”
Vince is eager to find out what he can do at the next level and now is his chance and he can't wait to finally get to Macedonia and play. Vince explained, “I'm looking forward to the entire experience.Just as if i was a freshman in college again, I want it all. Being a rookie is always the funniest, but also the hardest part. Playing wise, I'm gonna make sure I make an impact from the moment I step foot on the court. I feel like I was a good player at Coppin. But I think I waited too long to make a statement.”
The season in Macedonia starts in early October and could end in May should Lirija advance to the Superleague Finals. Lirija finished last season in fifth place in the Superleague standings with a 10-18 record, seven games behind Torus Skopje for the last playoff spot. Knowing Vince and his new teammates, they're looking to achieve bigger and better results.
