The Coppin State Lady Eagles under new head coach Millicent Sylvan-Van Norden made history this afternoon at Hill Field House. Coppin State started well and never let their foot off the gas in a 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, 25-17) sweep of Loyola (MD). This victory was Coppin State's first ever over the Greyhounds in their 16 matches between them.
What propelled Coppin State (2-5) this afternoon was their blocking and serving. The Lady Eagles recorded 10 team blocks and 11 service aces on the day. Salena Weekly and Ariel Richard led CSU with seven kills a piece.
This was a total turnaround from yesterday when Coppin was swept by UMBC and Towson 3-0 respectively. Tyler Phillips said about the blocks, "Well, our blockers have been working really hard on penetrating the net, watching the hitter and moving towards the ball. So I think today, everybody clicked and was working together."
Coppin exposed the Greyhound defense early and often by serving and hitting to their right side. Coach Sylvan-Van Norden said, "The girls did a great job of executing. If you look at our missed serves, we only had four where we were fininshing matches last weekend with 10 to 13. So they really minimized their mistakes in our hitting errors and the percentages every game. So ideally, the way we played today, win or lose, is how we want to play every match."
Faye Lukas led Loyola with 12 kills on the night for the Greyhounds. Unfortunately for Loyola (2-4), mistakes were their undoing on the afternoon. The Greyhounds were held to an .071 hitting percentage by a Coppin defense which made them pay dearly for their unforced errors.
In the third game, Loyola scored the first two points before Coppin regained control of the match scoring the next seven points.
