Arnold HR, Defense seal Coppin victory over GW

by Keith Henry

On a foggy, rainy evening at Coppin State Field, the Coppin State Lady Eagles produced their second straight come from behind victory when they overcame a 4-0 deficit after four innings to defeat the George Washington Colonials 5-4.

It didn't look that way early for the Lady Eagles as GW pitcher Heidi Penna had a one hit shutout going for her through four innings.

Also, George Washington (10-10-1) jumped on Coppin State pitcher Paige Arnold in the top of the third inning when after one out, Judy Orlandi walked and stole second base. Then Chelsea Lenhart ripped a single to left, driving in Orlandi to give GW the 1-0 lead. Katie Terrazas walked, then Autumn Taylor reached on a bobbled grounder by Charma Robinson which loaded the bases.

Next, Wilson made the score 2-0 when she smacked an RBI single to right field. But Terrazas was on the way home as well until right fielder Melanie Buck threw her out at the plate for the second out. Tara Fogarty then grounded out to second to end the inning.

GW got a couple more run in the top of the fourth when with one out, Alexandra Del Prete singled. Then Sandi Moynihan singled through the left side. Then GW executed a double steal putting runners at second and third. Arnold struck out Orlandi, then Lenhart sent a ground ball to Erica Washington at third who just threw the ball past Jade Dudley at first. That error scored Del Prete and Zakeri, who pinch ran for Moynihan. That increased the Colonial lead to 4-0. Arnold struck out Terrazas to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Coppin bats started coming alive. Dudley singled to center, then Arnold singled to right. Next, Patrice Williams reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Latifah Bernard struck out looking, then Washington reached on a throwing error by Orlandi at second. That error drove in Dudley. Then Heather Josker hit a sacrifice fly to right. Arnold scored on the throw infield to cut the deficit to 4-2. Robinson popped to the shortstop to end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Burgos led off with a double down the right field line. Then after Amber Miller struck out, Dudley walked. That led to Arnold's opportunity at the plate. Arnold took Penna's pitch over the left center field fence for a three-run homer to give Coppin State (5-7) the 5-4 advantage. Colonials head coach Stacey Schramm said about the home run, "Our pitcher made a mistake and it's one pitch."

Coppin head coach Larry Hineline said, "I don't want to rely on three-run homers. But we got a couple of boppers in Jade and Paige that can hit the long ball. Sooner or later, they can leave the park. Between them last year, they had about 20 home runs (17 between the two in 2010). So right now, they've got three. So we're going to get some more."

In the top of the seventh, the Colonials made Coppin sweat this out. After Orlandi grounded to third, Lenhart doubled past the outstretched arms of Williams in left field. Lenhart advanced to third on an Arnold wild pitch. Then Terrazas grounded to third for the second out. Next, Taylor walked. But when Taylor tried to steal second, Burgos gunned the ball to a waiting Robinson who tagged Taylor out near second base to finish the game in thrilling fashion.

Hineline said about the defensive play, "When you got good players, you make plays. Stacey made a nice throw and Charma made a nice tag and it was great."

The second game was called by the umpires due to rain. Coppin State was already ahead 4-0 when the umpires made the ruling.
