Coppin State went out on the court without the services of Michael Harper because he violated team rules. However, the Eagles were in this game against Hampton at the PEC until a 14-2 second half run allowed the Pirates to topple Coppin 67-59.
What really hurt Coppin State this night was the play inside the paint. Hampton (12-3, 2-0 MEAC) recorded six blocked shots and outscored Coppin 34-12 inside the paint. CSU head coach Ron "Fang" Mitchell said, "it was a situation where Hampton got lay-ups all day long. That's just not reacting, not doing what we're supposed to do. Not ready to take that offensive foul. It just wasn't good."
Hampton head Coach said, "The guys did a good job. One thing over the break in playing the teams that we played with the size they have. It showed our guys that you can compete. You just have to go fight for it. Now they're starting to do that."
