Eight is enough for Lady Eagles to turn back Norfolk State

by Keith Henry

Coppin State head coach Derek Brown said after the N.C. A&T loss that his ladies had to learn to grow up and play the full 40 minutes in order to win.

For the consequences of Saturday's brawl, Leola Spotwood, Crystal Whittington and Jeanine Manley had to sit for tonight's game vs. Norfolk State. But the rest of the Lady Eagles stepped up defensively and ended the game with a 13-4 run in their 64-55 victory over the Lady Spartans at the PEC.

Despite the fact that eight ladies played this night, Coppin State showed their mettle at a crucial time and they closed out a determined Norfolk State squad at the opportune time.

CSU head coach Derek Brown said about the situation, "Even with eight, it was just a matter that we couldn't substitute the way that we usually do. But there was no dropoff in talent. Larissa (Carter) and Kyra (Coleman) play against Crystal and Jeanine all the time in practice and they hold their own. Leola wasn't there. But to say that we had a dropoff, I don't think that's fair to say because we have ten players. All ten of those players are basically the same in talent. So therefore, we looked at it as if we only have a couple of people we could sub. Not a dropoff in talent because the talent was there. So instead of having 10 people to play, we had eight people to play."

Carter said about this, "I think that we had some players that weren't with us for the game. We had no choice but to step up. It was just a test to see if we really have what it takes as a team to get the job done and we did without our leaders. We still pulled it through."
