Missouri State knocks off Lady Eagles

by Keith Henry

The Coppin State Lady Eagles had their moments of success. But they couldn't sustain much of anything down the stretch as the Missouri State Lady Bears used a late run to defeat CSU 67-61 at the PEC.

The emergence of CSU center Jeanine Manley this evening was a welcome sight for Coppin head coach Derek Brown. "She moved," said Brown. "She got the ball, she played hard and got exhausted. That's what we're talking about. You got to play to exhaustion."

Manley stepped up early and scored a game high 22 points on the evening. Missouri State head coach Nyla Milleson said about Jeanine, "She's pretty good. She gets down there on that block and can turn over and use that left hand. She's pretty unstoppable. But I thought, coming down the stretch, we did a lot better job on her."

Manley's emergence helped Coppin (2-6) jump out to an early 14-8 lead with 11:10 left in the first half.

But the Lady Bears fought back with a 20-3 run. The run was led by the combination of guards Casey Garrison and Jasmine Malone. Both combined to score 37 points in the game. Garrison (team high 19 points) hit a couple of three during that stretch while Malone (18 points) did some damage inside the paint. A lay-up from Regan Soldner gave the Lady Bears a 28-17 advantage with 5:08 left.

Coach Milleson said about this, "We got good players and good depth. I said that our depth was the key today. But our experienced players, when it came to making plays, got it done for us."

Coppin made some adjustments and started driving inside the paint a little more and made some open jumpers. Also, the Lady Eagles kept feeding Manley in the paint leading to free throws. Manley hit her last seven free throws to help draw CSU to within 35-33 at halftime.

Coppin completed their comeback in the second half and eventually went up 45-42 on a Leola Spotwood short jumper with 12:34 left in the game. Missouri State (8-2) had enough and just turned up the heat on the young Lady Eagles.

The Bears outscored Coppin 24-11 down the stretch. CSU ran into some problems with their shooting and couldn't attack the Missouri State zone. Late in that run, the Lady Bears kept beating Coppin to the spot on offense and they denied the ball inside to Manley on defense. A Malone jumper gave the Bears a 66-56 advantage with 1:20 left, shutting down any chance of another Coppin comeback.

Coach Brown said about the game, "We're learning each game. We're young. We're staying in games and I think it's just a matter of time before we get ourselves over the hump. It takes some experience to win close games. Those last four minutes of the game, you need somebody to take control of the game. Somebody that will score you points. That will show itself eventually. Who that might be? I don't know. But that's basically what it is."

The Lady Eagles have a big test coming up on Dec. 22 when they travel to D.C. to take on #20 Georgetown in their stiffest test of the regular season.
