Coppin knocks off West Virginia Tech

By Keith Henry

Coppin head coach Ron “Fang” Mitchell will definitely take the result. However, Fang wasn’t too pleased about how his Coppin State team performed in the Eagles’ 79-63 victory over the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears on Saturday evening at the Physical Education Complex.

The play off the bench for the Eagles was very crucial to their victory. Coppin State (4-3) outscored their opponent from the NAIA 27-4 on the bench alone. Fang said, “I’m very disappointed in how we came out. We didn’t come out with the energy that we definitely needed to come out with to definitely beat this team. I’m very fortunate that we have a deep enough bench that we can go to and they came through and gave us some good quality minutes today and helped us secure the win.”

CSU point guard Tony Gallo and forward Antonio Willams led the Eagles with 16 points a piece. All 11 Eagles played and scored that evening. Williams was happy about the contributions from the bench, saying, “That was real good. Our freshmen came in, did a really good job and helped give us a boost.”

West Virginia Tech (4-3) came to Coppin with only eight players. They put up a good effort early, but eventually the Eagles’ depth and their 48.2% shooting wore down the Golden Bears. Head coach Bob Williams stated about the game, “We just didn’t play well. I thought that (Coppin) came out hitting some shots. They were only averaging six three-pointers made per game. We were a little surprised that they came out and made seven in the first half. They shot so well. I didn’t think we played particularly well. We were 6-of-26 from three-point range and shot 34.5% from the floor. Our defense is bad right now. We have two two-guards that are out right now with injuries. We had a point guard that we had to let go. We’re adding three new players next semester, so we’ll get better.”

On the bright side for the Golden Bears, guard Josh Proctor led everyone with 23 points. That was something which wasn’t lost with Fang though.

Coppin broke open a close game with a 19-2 run in only 97 seconds of the first half. Turning a slim 11-10 lead to a 30-12 advantage on a Michael Murray lay-up.

West Virginia Tech came back and got within 39-31 on a three from Nicholas Kjaerholt with 17:53 left in the second half. But Coppin responded with a big 21-9 run over the next 7:19 to put the Golden Bears away. Williams led the run and it was punctuated by a Michael Harper dunk with 10:34 remaining to give the Eagles a commanding 60-40 lead.

Coppin State has a nine-day layoff to take final exams and then they embark on a very tough road trip starting at #6 ranked Connecticut on December 20, then they travel to Wisconsin, #16 Kentucky and #25 Texas before they come back to the PEC and host Division II Wilmington on January 3.
