Another year, another show of success for the Coppin State Track & Field squad. Four Eagles will attempt to do damage at the University of North Florida starting Wednesday and qualify for Nationals.
On the ladies’ side, juniors Latifa Ali and Kimani Alphonse qualified for the women’s 400-meter dash. On the men’s side, junior Jeff Hammond qualified in the long jump while junior James Bell qualified in the high jump.
Ali qualified by winning the MEAC Championship in the women’s 400 in 52.99 seconds. Alphonse qualified by placing 2nd to Ali in the women’s 400 in 53.70 seconds.
Hammond qualified by winning the long jump at the University of South Florida Invitational with a leap of 7.67 meters (25 feet 2 inches). Bell qualified by winning the high jump at the University of Maryland’s Kehoe Twilight Meet by clearing 2.07 meters (6 feet 9.5 inches).
Ali and Alphonse make their first round appearance on Thursday night at 7:25 pm. Hammond starts the long jump tomorrow night at 6 pm. James Bell starts the men’s high jump event on Friday afternoon at 2:30 pm.
Also, Morgan State junior Tia Jackson qualified for regionals in the long jump and Maryland Eastern Shore junior Faithlyn Irving qualified in the triple jump.
