Coppin State Track at NCAA East Prelims

By Keith Henry

The Coppin State Track & Field team had four Eagles qualify for the NCAA East Regionals at the University of North Florida. Unfortunately, none of them qualified for the Nationals despite great efforts from all of them.

Seniors Latifa Ali and Kimani Alphonse qualified for the women’s 400-meter dash. As for the men, the jumpers in senior Jeff Hammond and junior James Bell qualified for the men’s long jump and high jump respectively.

As for what happened in North Florida, Alphonse didn’t make it out of the first round, finishing 8th in her heat of the race. She finished the race in 55.21 seconds, which placed her 42nd out of 48 participants.

Latifa progressed to the East finals by placing 5th in her heat, finishing her race in 53.52 seconds. Then in the finals, Ali placed 7th in her heat, finishing in 53.82 seconds which placed her 16th overall.

The men came close to qualifying for Nationals.

Hammond, who recovered from an injury he sustained in the Morgan State Legacy Meet, placed 42nd in the regional with his jump of 7.07 meters (23 feet, 2.5 inches).

Bell cleared 2.04 meters (6 feet, 8.5 inches) to place 6th in his flight, but he couldn’t clear 2.09 meters (6 feet, 10.5 inches) which could’ve sent him to Nationals. His result placed Bell 23rd overall in the event.

Next season is an Olympic year as all Eagles will have a goal of placing themselves in Paris, France for the Olympic Games.
