Lady Eagles blast Lincoln

by Keith Henry

The Coppin State Lady Eagles opening night at the PEC was just what the doctor ordered for the team. Five Lady Eagles scored in double figures in their 95-65 demolition of Division II Lincoln (PA).

CSU came in looking to establish a mindset of being aggressive on the court. They drove into the paint more often than they have all season long. That was something along the lines of what CSU head coach Derek Brown was looking for. "We're trying to get tougher," said Coach Brown. "Hustle. that's the main thing I'm looking at right now. How much hustle we have. Just mixing it up in there and getting aggressive. Trying to get things done. That's basically it."

Lincoln took their only lead of the game on a three by Sharay DuBose to start the scoring. It didn't last long as Coppin scored nine straight led by Jeanine Manley inside the paint with a couple of lay-ups. Leola Spotwood's lay-up gave the Lady Eagles a 9-3 lead with 16:58 remaining. CSU (1-3) was hardly threatened after that.

Coppin's size and height was a big factor in their win against the Lady Lions. Spotwood and Larissa Carter recorded double doubles on the night. Carter scored a game high 18 points along with 10 rebounds while Spotwood had 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Danielle Smallwood led Lincoln (0-2) with 17 points while DuBose followed with 13 in their loss. Head coach Andy Haman said about the game, "With Danielle and Sharay, those are the two most explosive players we have. Coppin is a good team and we had to raise the bar. I feel those two raised the bar, but we have to put two good halves together."

Coppin gathered a team high 52 rebounds and forced 35 Lincoln turnovers along with 15 steals. The only issue with Coppin was at the free throw line. They weren't so hot with that on the night only making 16 of 36 shots from there. That'll have to improve in order for Coppin to get on the board in the MEAC.

Coppin gets into their MEAC schedule on Saturday when they have an afternoon battle at Hill Field House against Morgan State. This will be another test for Coach Brown's young squad. Brown stated, "It's a toughness that you (must) have in order to go to Morgan. You got to be gritty. This is a young team and these freshman haven't been in that situation. So we're trying to teach them what this whole game is about on Saturday. Hopefully, the older ones will let them know because it's a whole new aggressiveness about that game. Things go faster in that game and hopefully we'll be ready for it."
