Coming off its heartbreaking loss at Georgetown last week, the Morgan State Bears bounced back in strong fashion at Homecoming and throttled Virginia University of Lynchburg 44-6 in Hughes Stadium this past Saturday.
After VUL fumbled the punt, Morgan State linebacker Lance Byndon recovered it at the VUL 10 with 12:07 left. Three plays later, Randall Nauden ran it in the end zone from three yards out. Gbundema’s extra point gives the Bears a 7-0 lead with 10:45 left in the first quarter.
The Bears (3-4) struck again with a four-yard touchdown run from quarterback Raymond Moore III with 12:34 left in the second quarter. The extra point from Gbundema made it 14-0 in MSU’s favor
Nearly five minutes later, the Bears struck again with a Keith Jenkins Jr. nine-yard touchdown run to help increase the Bears advantage to 21-0 with 7:46 left.
On the next possession, Moore III was intercepted at the VUL 1.
Next play, Erick Hunter sacked VUL quarterback Max Zavala in the end zone for a safety with 1:50 left before halftime. Morgan State’s lead ballooned to 23-0 over VUL.
Moore III threw an 18-yard pass to Justin Perry with 10:39 left in the third quarter to give the Bears a 30-0 lead. Moore III had a good game, converting 13 of his 22 throws for 173 yards, a touchdown and an interception.
Next, Daejeaun Dennis scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to help increase the Bear advantage to 37-0 with 11:36 left in the game.
VUL (3-4) finally got on the board on a touchdown pass from Zavala to Jacob Newman with 7:34 left in the game. The two-point conversion attempt was no good on an offensive pass interference. Morgan State leads the Dragons 37-6.
Morgan QB Josiah Bushnell ran it in from 38 yards out to finish the scoring for the Bears. The extra point from Gbundema gave the Bears a 44-6 lead with 3:12 left.
The non-conference part of the season is over and MEAC play looms large for the Bears. MSU head coach Damon Wilson learned from this part of the season, “It was tough. We found some guys that can help us be successful in the MEAC. We know it’s not going to be easy. We have to come to play every weekend.”
The Bears start MEAC play two weeks from today when they
head to Washington, D.C. to take on the Howard Bison October 25 at 3:30 pm.
