Coppin defense steps up in win over Howard

by Keith Henry

The comeback of Derrius Ward seemed like a sign of positivity for the Coppin State men's basketball team.

When things start coming together for the Eagles, it had to start defensively. That was the key in the Eagles' 72-61 over two-time defending MEAC champion Howard Monday night in the PEC. "We defended for 40 minutes. Our defense frustrated them. At Howard, we let them get off a little bit. We played a complete basketball game (tonight)," said Coppin head coach Larry Stewart.

The Eagles' defense limited the Bison to just under 34% shooting in the game. And only 24% in the first half.

Coppin also made a huge difference inside the paint. They were able to drive to the hoop early and often. Stewart said, "We knew that they were going to go small. Howard likes to space you out. So for us, it was to drive the ball, finish plays in the paint and I thought we did a pretty decent job of that."

The Eagles outscored Howard in the paint 28-12.

Howard got on the board early with a three from the corner. However, Coppin scored the next eight points to get back on top for good.

Toby Nnadozie and Ward combined for 42 points on the night to help turn the tide for the Eagles.

Coppin has three games left before they turn their attention to Norfolk and the MEAC Tournament at the Scope Arena,

But first, they head on the road to Dover on Saturday afternoon to challenge Delaware State.
