Morgan State knocks off Millersville

By Keith Henry

It doesn't matter if they are Division I or II, you have to put your best foot forward at the right time to come out on top. That's what the Bears did down the stretch in their 77-71 win over Division II Millersville (PA).

The Bears overcame a couple of big deficits to seize victory at Hill Field House this evening.

“Millersville is a very good team. They came in here trying to win. They shot the cover off the three-point line. I take my hat off to them in what they did and how they did it. We got to get better,” said Morgan State head coach Kevin Broadus. Trevor Moore led the Bears with 18 points on the night.

But it was their ability to get to the free throw line that helped the Bears out the most. Morgan State (4-5) nailed 21 of their 26 free throw attempts on the evening while Millersville (6-1) converted four of their six attempts on the game.

Coach Broadus stated, “Tonight for us, it was good that we made our free throws. It’s been a long time coming in making our free throws. But we just got to lock in and focus more and figure out how we can be better every day. For us, we can’t take anyone lightly. Right now, we’re not good enough to do that. So we just have to get better.”

The Marauders were ahead 26-18 with 11:19 left in the first half due to their big three- point shooting display. But the Bears responded with a 16-3 run capped by a lay-up from Isaiah Blake with 4:53 left giving the Bears a 34-29 advantage.

But it got tighter after that as Millersville cut the lead down to 38-37 at the halftime mark. With the Bears up 52-49 and 14:01 remaining, the Marauders scored 12 straight points capped by a three from Ryan Davis, giving Millersville a 61-52 lead with 11:56 remaining.

But the Bears answered back by scoring 14 straight points. De'Torrion Ware ended a run with a three pointer to give the Bears a 66-61 advantage with 7:26 left in regulation.

Millersville gave it one last try, scoring the next six points to give the Marauders a 67-66 advantage on a free throw from James Sullivan, who led all scorers with 20 points, with 3:35 remaining in the game.

The Bears soon broke back on top on a Seventh Woods steal leading to a Sherwyn Devonish-Prince lay-up with 1:53 left, giving the Bears a lead they wouldn't relinquish this time at 70-67.

Morgan State travels to Longwood (VA) on Saturday at 3 pm.
